Review: A Working Man (2025)

A Working Man dropped on March 28, 2025, and it is exactly what you would expect from a Jason Statham movie. It was directed by David Ayer and co-written by Sylvester Stallone. It stars Statham as Levon Cade, a former black ops guy turned construction worker who gets pulled back into action when his boss’s daughter gets kidnapped. I usually enjoy these kinds of movies, dumb action flicks where Statham punches and shoots his way through every problem, so I figured I would give this one a shot. Here’s a quick overview of the plot. Obviously, spoilers ahead.

The movie kicks off by introducing Levon, who is just trying to live a normal life. He used to be part of some black ops group, but now he is working construction and trying to stay out of trouble. The opening scenes show him settling into a simple, quiet life. It is not long before the real plot kicks in. His boss at the construction site comes to him panicked because his teenage daughter has gone missing. Levon starts digging around and finds out that the daughter was taken by some low level criminals running a trafficking ring. What is kind of dumb is how easily Levon finds the bad guys. He goes full action hero within about twenty minutes, breaking into clubs and safehouses, beating people down, and getting information without much of a plan. It is the kind of setup where you know exactly what is coming, but it is still fun to watch. Statham starts tearing through random henchmen like it is nothing. As the movie goes on, Levon gets deeper into the criminal underworld. He finds out the girl’s kidnapping is part of a bigger operation involving corrupt cops, some creepy guy with an LMG, and a high level politician.

The back half of the movie is pretty much a straight line of action. Levon tracks down the higher ups running the operation and works his way up the chain. There is a lot of punching, kicking, shooting, and chasing, and not much thinking. It moves fast though, so it never really gets boring. They throw in a few emotional scenes trying to show Levon struggling with his past, but it feels tacked on and does not really add much. This movie is at its best when it just lets Jason Statham beat the hell out of everyone. Without spoiling exactly how it ends, the movie builds to a big showdown at an abandoned farmhouse. It is not anything you have not seen before, but it gets the job done. Statham goes full wrecking ball, the bad guys get what is coming to them, and everything wraps up nice and neat. It was not some mind blowing ending, but it was satisfying enough.

Action wise, the movie was fine. There were some good fight scenes, and I never found myself getting bored. The pacing kept things moving pretty well, and there were enough shootouts and beatdowns to keep me entertained. The big fight at the end was probably the best part of the whole thing. It felt like they finally went all out with the action, and it was a fun way to wrap it up. But the plot? It was pretty stupid. It felt rushed and thrown together, like they just needed an excuse for Jason Statham to beat people up. Some parts really made no sense if you thought about them for more than two seconds. The worst scene by far was when Levon is riding away on a motorcycle, and two cars full of guys are shooting at him from like ten feet away, and they miss every single shot. It was so goofy it took me right out of the movie.

The acting was also hit or miss. Jason Statham was fine. He does the same thing he always does, and that is not a bad thing if you know what you are getting into. But the character Jenny was rough. Her acting came off super corny, and it made a lot of the more emotional scenes fall flat. I didn’t like how she had no reaction to Levon killing tons of guys in front of her. She didn’t even react to having to kill someone herself. And the middle fingers? The fight with Dutch ended up feeling rushed and kind of weak. It was over in literally 10 seconds. Overall, the movie ended up being worse than I expected. I thought it was gonna be more like Wrath of Man, another Statham movie I actually really enjoyed. But A Working Man just did not hit the same way. It was fine for a dumb action movie, but it is definitely a one and done for me. This one gets a:
